Outdoor Kansas
The Kansas Wildlife Federation published The Kansas Sportsman as a newsprint tabloid. I was hired to reposition this association's member publication as a more broadly appealing magazine to help attract and retain more members.
The magazine featured a unique, dual-editorial concept to satisfy a fractured board (hunters and conservationists), with first-half editorial focusing on conservation and the environment, with the second half of the book featuring The Kansas Sportsman, complete with an inside "cover," different typography and graphics and editorial content aimed at hunters and anglers.
My responsibilities included:
*Working with the KWF's board to develop an
editorial for each issue.
*Accessing and selecting editorial from the National Wildlife
Federation's monthly offerings.
*Working with the art director to develop the magazine's graphics
and grid.
*Developing a sales department, training a sales manager, and
developing print and online sales and marketing materials.
*Editing all editorial.
*Directing production and printing of the magazine and collateral
pieces.
*Working with KE's CFO to develop budgets, manage receivables and
keep the magazine on track.
*Representing the magazine at the KWF's annual convention.
My accomplishments included:
*Converting the magazine from a two-color,
newsprint tabloid to a glossy, four-color magazine.
*Developing a sales department, including training a sales
manager and developing various sales tools.
*Developing a Web site for the Federation, complete with
magazine, legislation and kids areas.
